Parkview Cancer Institute’s 2019 “The Shirt”

Last Modified: 4/15/2019

In 2018, the Parkview Cancer Institute (PCI) introduced “The Shirt”, a program to help raise money for the Transformative Cancer Care Fund (TCCF). This fund was created to support PCI in its efforts to deliver the best patient-centered experience possible. Donations help provide crucial items such as dietary supplements and nutrition needed to maintain health, educational materials, emotional counseling genetics counseling, and other needs not covered by insurance. The TCCF delivers hope along with the materials and resources needed for healing.

Each year, a PCI patient is invited to lend their artistic talents to the project and design a unique image for “The Shirt”. The 2019 contributor is someone very special to our health system family: Donna Packnett, wife of Parkview Health president and CEO Mike Packnett. Donna is a breast cancer survivor and fierce advocate for the patients and families touched by cancer.

She enlisted the help of daughter Kristin, who, along with an artistic flair, also feels a strong connection to the reality that cancer patients cannot navigate the treatment process alone. “We’re not only the family of a Parkview co-worker,” Kristin said. “I’m also the daughter of a survivor who used Parkview services when she was going through cancer. Now that we have this beautiful building and this place of healing and hope, it’s a true honor to be part of something that’s going to create awareness for all cancers.”

When it came to the design, the vision came together fairly quickly. “My mind went back to the opening of PCI. We’d had an idea for the ribbon cutting of all colors of ribbon put together to make a large chain. So I drew a big ribbon and started adding other colors.” The colorful symbols represent all of the forms of the disease, and those touched by its effects.
